International Everest Day 2023: May 29

On 29 May 1953, two people finally stood on top of the highest mountain in the world that’s is Mt. Everest 8848.86m – for the very much first time. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of Mt. Everest to make history in mountaineering. They became the first people to reach the summit of Everest. Today, May 29, 2023, International Everest Day is being celebrated. The day has significant importance in the mountain tourism of Nepal.

The door to the mountains of Nepal actually opened after the successful ascent of Everest. The conquest of Everest drew the attention of the world to Nepal and people started travelling to the country for adventure tourism. Trekking and climbing became synonymous with Nepal which still is a major share-holder of the Nepali tourism industry.

The development of tourism in Nepal actually started to be noticed only after the Everest ascent. Thousands of people started travelling to Nepal only because of their awareness that Mt. Everest – the highest peak in the world – is in Nepal.

The mountaineering and adventure tourism industry in Nepal now attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurers every year from around the world. After the Everest conquest, hundreds of thousands of people trekked to the Everest region and reached its base camp on the popular Everest Base Camp Trek. Thousands of people have also successfully made it to the top of the highest mountain in the world.

The Everest region trek is one of the most sought after trekking regions in the world topping the list in Nepal. Along with Everest, other regions also started opening up for travellers from around the world. In course of time, Nepal gained popularity in the world as a trekking paradise. Norway climber Kristin Harila becomes the fastest female to climb the world’s 14 highest mountains above 8,000 meters by reaching all the summits within a year.

A Norwegian who just became the fastest female to climb the world’s 14 highest mountains is now aiming to become the fastest person to complete the feat by beating the record set by a male climber in 2019.

Kristin Harila, 37, successfully scaled Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Shishapangma in China and arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, on Thursday, announcing that she will begin climbing in Nepal this month.

“That’s the plan,” Harila said when asked if she is aiming to set a new record for scaling the highest peaks.

She hopes to climb the seven highest peaks in Nepal, including Mount Everest, during the current spring climbing season that ends in May, and then complete the remaining peaks in Pakistan within the next four months.

“We have to sit down and have a meeting and discuss if we can do all seven mountains in Nepal in the spring. We have to look at the (weather) forecast and see how it goes,” she said.

She has roughly four weeks to climb the seven highest mountains in Nepal. Most climbers take the entire climbing season to scale just one peak.

“Now we are going to rest some days and then we will see if we go to Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, depending on the weather and conditions,” she said.

Harila began her attempt to climb all 14 peaks in April 2022 and completed 12 by September. She then had to pause because Chinese authorities did not allow her to climb last year. China restricted access by foreign climbers because of the coronavirus pandemic.

She was able to obtain a permit from China this year and scaled Shishapangma last week and Cho Oyu earlier this week.

The current record is held by Nirmal Purja, a Nepal-born British citizen who scaled the 14 highest peaks in 189 days in 2019, beating the previous record of more than seven years set by a South Korean climber. Purja’s climbs were later made into a popular Netflix documentary, “14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible.”

Issuing a press note on Tuesday, the CAAN said Nepal Country Manager Binod Abraham and Airport Manager  Narayan Pakwan of Flydubai have been barred from entering the airport as the official page of the airlines, without an official conclusion of the authority, stated that the accident occurred due to a bird strike at TIA.

The Flydubai plane that took off from TIA on Monday night with 168 passengers on board had reportedly caught fire in its engine after an explosion in the sky of Koteshwor in Kathmandu.
