Overview of Kanchenjunga Circuit trek
Mount- Kanchenjunga lies in the far eastern part of Nepal which is in the border of Sikkim (Himalayan Town of India).
Mount Kanchenjunga is the second-highest mountain in Nepal and the third highest in the world with the height of 8685m. Because the region is protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a special trekking permit is required.
On this Kanchenjunga Circuit trek, we will visit the South and North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. The area is also home to the Himalayan Black Bear, Assamese Macaque, Musk deer, Red Panda, Snow Panther, and others .On the way, we will witness different landscapes full of waterfalls, rivers, green dense forest , rhododendrons, orchids, lilies, primula, pine forests, birch and many more. we will also witness amazing Yalung glacier. Furthermore, we will also visit Ramtang and Oktang monasteries. We will also explore the local lifestyle and culture of Sherpa, Limbu, Rai, Tamang people this ethnic groups of people will greet us with warm friendliness and with their hearty hospitality
Itinerary of Kanchenjunga Circuit trek
Day 1: Arrival at the Kathmandu Valley
We welcome you to the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, the motherland of Sita, and the treasure of the world; Nepal. One of our staff will welcome you in the departure section of Tribhuwan
International Airport (TIA) where you will be taken by a private car to your respective hotel. After a while, you may have Nepali Thakali food as the meal for the first day.
Day 2: Site-seeing Kathmandu valley and preparation for the trek
On the second day, we will visit some of the tourist places for half a day. After 2 o’clock, we will be having some shopping for warm clothes for the trek at local stores in Kathmandu. On the same day, you will bag pack all your requirement for the trek.
You will prepare yourself both physically and mentally to hike around the Himalayan surface.
DAY 3: FLY TO BHADRAPUR , DRIVE TO ILAM
Today we will take our early morning flight to the small airport at Bhadrapur which lies in the Eastern part of Nepal. From there we will drive in a bus until we get to the beautiful town of Ilam where we will spend our night in the hotel. Liam is very famous for its tea plantations and Darjeeling is not far away on the Indian side of the border .The green tea plants and it’s cultivated area will capture everyone’s eyes
DAY 4: DRIVE TO TAPLEJUNG , TREK TO MITLUNG
Today after having breakfast we will leave early in the morning and drive through tea and cardamom plantations. We will stop at the top of a pass on the road where we will witness our first views of Mount Kanchenjunga. After then We will drive onto Taplejung.
After having lunch in Taplejung we will gradually start descending by following a steep trail down to the Tamur river.
DAY 5: TREK TO CHIRWA
Today we will gradually descends down to the Tamur river by passing several cultivated village area that grows crops including rice, millet, potatoes and vegetables.
We will also witness wooden bridge crossing the Thiwa Khola. After then we will reach Chirwa, the village which has a bazaar, some lodges and shops. We camp a short walk from the village in a large field near a large boulder.
DAY 6: TREK TO SEKATHUM
After leaving our camp today we will start to trek by following the trail along the Tamur river and valley floor. After walking for a couple of hours we will arrived at Taplechok (1380m.) Where we will going to be checking our trekking permit at the park gate after then the trail ascends by crossing a suspension bridge over the river. We walk along the west bank where we will explore the .Cardamon forest which is also known as a cash crop .
After walking for 3.5 hour we will finally reach Phembu where we will be having our lunch. After having our lunch we will continue ascendIng above Tamur river to Lelep (1,750m). Where we will be crossing a suspension bridge over Tamur river to enter the more narrow Ghunsa Khola Valley. Today we will camp at Sekathum. From where we will witness our first views of the high Himalaya where Jannu is visible on a clear day up the Ghunsa valley.
DAY 7: TREK TO AMJILOSSA
After leaving Sekathum camp we will cross the suspension bridge and follow the path through dense green forest. In some places the trail is steep and narrow as we walk through a dramatic gorge. We wil have our lunch at Solima. After having our lunch we will start ascending through dense forest. After then We will reach Amjilossa high above the gorge where we will camp for tonight.
DAY 8: TREK TO GYBALA
After leaving Amjilossa camp we will gradually start short ascent to a ridge. On the trail we will walk through lush bamboo, oak and rhododendron forest. After then We will gradually start descending towards Ghunsa Khola at a place called Thyanyani. Here we will also pass a large waterfall. After then finally there is a final steep climb to get Gyabla.
DAY 9: TREK TO GHUNSA
After leaving Gyabla camp, Today we will ascend toward Phole. As we will climb above 3,000m today we will be feeling cooler apart from that we will get to witness more rhododendrons and azaleas. Before Phole we pass through the winter settlement used by Ghunsa villagers.
In Phole Village we will witness some Buddhist monastery and also you are likely to see the women weaving carpets. After walking for one and half hour we will reach Ghunsa.
Ghunsa is a Tibetan village houses are made with wooden covered in colourful prayer flags. There are lodges and shops and a small Kanchenjunga Conservation Area office. We camp in the garden of one of the lodges and will use their dining room for meals. There are hot showers available in the lodge.
DAY 10: ACCLIMATISATION DAY AT GHUNSA
As we are going in high altitude places we also need to take some rest in order to adapt with the altitude. So, today will be taking rest and explore Ghunsa village. We follow the route above the village to Lobsang La. This walking trail reaches 4,000m in about 3 hours from camp and 2 hours to return to Ghunsa.
DAY 11: TREK TO KHAMBACHEN
After leaving Ghunsa camp the trail will goes through pine and rhododendron forest. We are on the east bank of the Ghunsa Khola and pass Buddhist mani walls and chortens along the way. After three hours we cross a bridge over Ghunsa Khola. We will have our lunch at Rampuk Kharka (3,720m) over the grassy land. As we are ascending more near to the mountain Today mountain scenery becomes ever more spectacular. The north face of Jannu towering above is dramatic. You have to be careful while crossing the landslide before Khambachen as there is a risk of rockfall. The trail will ascend up hillside then gradually descends to Khambachen.
DAY 12: ACCLIMATISATION AND REST DAY AT KHAMBACHEN
As we are ascending toward high altitude places we have to take rest day for our betterment . In the morning you can join a walk. This helps your body adapt to the high altitude by following “climb high, sleep low”. To witness beautiful view of Mount Jannu the walk up Nupchu Khola from Khambachen is worth it. You can also take some rest in your camp and also take some photograpes
DAY 13: TREK TO LHONAK
After leaving Khambachen camp , today we will trek through a seasonal yak herder’s camp at Ramtang(4,370m). We will explore thevegetation such as azalea, juniper and rhododendron. After an hour or so will pass through rockier trail and we pass under a landslide area. Keep moving at a steady pace and to keep alert for any rockfall. We walk through rocky areas and cross moraines North West of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The campsite at Lhonak is near some stone huts. There are superb views of Wedge Peak (6,750m), Mera (6,344m), Nepal Peak (6,910m), Twins (7,351m) among others.
DAY 14: TREK TO PANGPEMA (5,143M) AT NORTHSIDE BASE CAMP OF KANCHENJUNGA AND RETURN TO LHONAK
After leaving Lhonak camp we will ascend toward Kanchenjunga Glacier for two hours. We have to walk very carefully as We will pass through several sections of loose rock and landslide area. After then we will climb up to reach the stone huts in a grassy area at Pangpema in a further two hours. From where we will witness The majestic view of the north face of Kanchenjunga . After eating our pack lunch we start the return back to Lhonak, taking about 3 hours
DAY 15: RETURN TO GHUNSA
After leaving Lhonak camp today We will follow same trail to return Ghunsa
DAY 16: TREK TO HIGH CAMP BEFORE MIRGIN LA
After leaving Ghunsa camp today also we will follow a rocky trail through the forest. We gradually start ascending a ridge with a short, steep section to Sele La(4290m.) . High Camp is well positioned in sheltered spot with wooden lodges and a small lake nearby. From where you can witness the majestic view of Mount Makalu in the far distance.
DAY 17: CROSS MIRGIN LA (4,663M) TO TREK TO TSERAM
Today early in the morning we will gradually start to trek from High Camp we will follow the trail ascending to our first pass Sinion La (4,440m). From here the trail contours the hillside and after a short steep climb brings you to Mirgin La Pass at 4,480m. After then we will gradually start descending before contouring before a short steep climb to the top of Sinelapche La Pass at 4,840m. From the top of every pass you will witness some magnificent views.
From this last passwe will start descending to Tseram. The trail descends through a small lake. Tseram is a small place which is located above the Simbua Khola.
DAY 18: DAY TRIP TO OKTANG (4,730M), CAMP AT RAMCHE
Today we will ascend to Ramche to have our lunch in the morning . We will pass through Yalung glacier into an ablation valley. All the peaks to the East straddle the India-Nepal border. Including Koktang (6,147m), Rathong (6,679m) and the Kabrus over 7,000m. There is a lake and a meadow along with two stone houses at Ramche. Often we can see blue sheep on the grassy slopes above.
In the afternoon we will pass through the ablation valley to Oktang. This is the view point of the South West face of Mount Kanchenjunga. The three main summits of Kanchenjunga massif are over 8,400m. We can also witness the climbing route to the summit of Kanchenjunga.
DAY 19: TREK TO TORTONG
After leaving Ramche camp We gradually start our trail return to Tseram. Passing the trail that continue walking along the river through rhododendron forest to Tortong. Where we will be camping for overnight
DAY 20: TREK TO YAMPHUDIN
After leaving Tortong camp today we will start the trail ascending through dense forest and through a landslide zone. After walking for about 3 hour we will reach at our lunch spot at Lamite Bhanjang. After having our lunch we will start descending on a good path before crossing Imja Khola. The trail then contours round the hillside until we reach Yamphudin.
DAY 21: TREK TO PHUMPE DANDA
After leaving Yamphudin camp today we will take an undulating path high above the river to Mamankhe. Then the trail enters a side canyon and crosses a stream on a long suspension bridge. We reach Phomphe village and two tea shops located on a ridge.
DAY 22: TREK TO KANDE BHANJANG
After leaving Phumpe Danda, on the way we will pass through several villages. We will pass through dense forest and villages until we reach up to Kande Bhanjyang where we will be camping for the night.
DAY 23: DRIVE TO SUKETAR
After leaving Khande Bhanjang, we will take jeep to Suketar. We have now finally completed an amazing journey around the Nepalese side of Mount Kanchenjunga and we will reach Suketar where we going to be staying overnight in a Lodge.
DAY 24: DRIVE TO BHADRAPUR
From Suketar We will take 10 hour drive to Bhadrapur following the same road as on the way in passing through Ilam.
Day 14: Flight from Kathmandu
we catch an flight early in the morning to Kathmandu after our long journey in the mountain.We can take rest and so some shopping around Thamel. Later on evening we will have our farewell dinner (nepali cuisine).
Day 15: Final Depature
As per your ticketing schedule, the 26th day is the day of departure back to your home country. If you are well impressed by the beauty and want to extend your visa period to explore different amazing treks and places, you may do that even on the last day.
